Jefferson Dog Training Services NO HYPE! NO JARGON!
Just effective help based on over 40 years experience of PRACTICAL, KIND, FUN TRAINING.
What training methods will I use?
Our training methods have been developed from a wide range of experience over many years. We use incentive methods (toys/food/praise) - check chains or any form of harsh handling are not allowed. We use “Error Free Learning” – we don’t let the dog go wrong, especially in the early stages. Each dog responds differently and if a particular method is not working, we modify our approach – our experience ensures that we quickly find the best method. Our training is designed to educate your dog to want to do what you want it to do. We use methods that your dog can easily understand – we “think dog” .
Our classes are full of fun for dog and owner. Families are encouraged to attend if possible.
Clicker training
We are great fans of clicker training and make use of it where appropriate in all our training. However, we realise that not all owners enjoy this approach, so we are also happy to use more traditional alternatives.
What’s the difference between a behaviourist and a dog trainer?
There should be none!
A behaviourist can tell you why your dog does something, but not all of them can tell you what to do about it.
A dog trainer can advise you on what to do without necessarily understanding the underlying reasons for your dog’s behaviour.
The best practitioners are a combination of the two. We strongly believe that understanding your dog’s behaviour is important but mainly because it leads to more effective practical approaches to training your dog or changing unwanted behaviour.
